Pokemon on the DS hot, on the Wii not |
|
After all of these years the Pokemon
phenomenon hasn’t died. Nintendo announced that they have shipped out
five million copies of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl in Japan alone. The
games come over to North America in April next year where it is sure to
sell over a million copies. While the DS games are at the top of last
week’s sales charts in Japan, Pokemon Battle Revolution for the Wii
barely made the chart at number ten. Only 67,607 copies of the first
online Wii title were sold. Narrowly beating out Pokemon Battle
Revolution was Wii Sports with 69,923 copies sold last week.

Nintendo on Wii Sports 2 rumour |
|
Nintendo has dismissed French reports that Wii Sports 2 is already in development as "pure rumour and speculation".
NGC
France had reported that a second title may well be in development,
perhaps even with swimming, basketball and other sports included.
The
first title comes free with the Wii in both the US and Europe, while
early sales figures in Japan, where it is sold separately, had it as
the console's most popular title.
"We're really pleased
with the reaction to Wii Sports - from people completely new to gaming
to the hardcore fans everyone has taken to it straight away," a
Nintendo UK spokesperson commented.
"It might just be the most popular game this Christmas in homes across the UK."
In
other words, they may not be talking about a sequel yet, but with
online gaming still to come to Wii and the first game's popularity
already significant, don't be surprised if the tune changes in future.

Nintendo Reveals Virtual Console Christmas |
|
While not exactly the free Christmas gift that many were hoping for,
Nintendo did see fit to spread some holiday cheer today with the
announcement that several new Virtual Console games would be made
available on Christmas Day. Wii owners with access to a high-speed
Internet connection will soon be able to download even more
retro-gaming goodness direct from Nintendo.
On Christmas morning, Wii owners will be treated to a surprise visit from Mario himself in the form of Super Mario Bros.
for the NES, which can be downloaded for a mere 500 Wii Points. If
Mario is not your thing -- although that would make owning a Wii pretty
strange -- then there are plenty of other ways to sate your thirst for
classic gaming on the Wii. Street Fighter II from the SNES is
also slapping its way onto Nintendo's download service for 800 Wii
Points. Players looking to vent their Christmas morning frustrations on
the legions of the undead can do so with Super Castlevania IV,
going for 800 Wii Points. Satisfying the desires of every child of the
90s, SEGA has saw fit to offer up the much-beloved Genesis title, ToeJam & Earl for 800 Wii Points. Finally, R-Type for the TurboGrafx-16 makes its return for 800 Wii Points.
This is the last Virtual Console Monday of 2006. Good thing Nintendo
decided to give us all a present in the form of some of our favorite
games ever.

Ipod Games Updated |
|
As noted in last night's Wireless Year in Review
extravaganza, Apple has finally updated the iTunes Music Store with two
new games: Royal Solitaire and Sudoku. Both games are published by
Electronic Arts. These are the first new games to be added to the
service since the original suite of nine games in September of this
year. That's three stagnant months that certainly left IGN Wireless
doubtful of the service's viability. (Our first batch of reviews
lamented some poor control choices, partially due to the click-wheel.)
But now category titles like sudoku and solitaire have been filled in,
joining popular genres like power and brick-breaking. Look for full
reviews of these new titles on IGN Wireless in the near future.

Nintendo sued over Wii wrist straps |
|
Last week Nintendo announced a voluntary replacement program
for the Wii Remote's wrist strap, which had been breaking at
inopportune times for some customers and resulting in collateral
damage. Shortly after the system launched in North America on November
19, reports popped up of broken cords, followed quickly by flying
controllers crashing into high-priced electronics, living room
furniture, and the occasional innocent bystander. While Nintendo acknowledged the Wii strap's problem and apparently addressed it, the company might not have done so in time.
On December 6, a Wii purchaser in Austin, Texas filed a class-action
suit against Nintendo, alleging the publisher of violating the
Washington Consumer Protection Act (Nintendo is based in the state of
Washington, where the suit was filed) by engaging in "unfair or
deceptive practices" by telling consumers that the wrist strap was to
prevent the controller from flying out of a user's hand during use, and
then providing a strap that was "ineffective for its intended use." The
suit also claims that the Wii Remote strap's problems constitute a
breach of warranty, and defines the class of people who may join the
suit as including anybody who has purchased a Wii.
"As a result of the defective nature of the wrist strap on the Wii
remote, plaintiff's wrist strap broke on his remote causing damage to
the Wii product plaintiff purchased," the suit reads. "The controller
is an essential component of any video game console, and so [the]
plaintiff is unable to use the Nintendo Wii for its intended purposes
as a result of the broken wrist band. Accordingly, it renders the Wii
console, which retails in the United States for $250, useless."
The Wii only comes packed with a single controller, but additional Wii Remotes can be purchased for $50 each.
One of the plaintiff's lawyers told GameSpot that Nintendo's
replacement program for the wrist straps will not cause them to drop
the suit. As for whether purchasers of new Wii systems that come with
thicker wrist straps for the Wii Remotes would be eligible to join the
class-action suit, he said it would depend in part on whether the new
straps adequately address the problem.
In his original filing, the plaintiff demands Nintendo cease
what he sees as its unfair and deceptive practices, to refund or
replace the strap with one that works as intended, reimburse him for
legal expenses, and "such other and further relief as the Court deems
just and proper."
As of press time, a Nintendo representative did not have a comment on the situation.

Wii Opera trial goes live December 22nd |
|
Nintendo has revealed that the Opera
web browser will be available from this Friday, December 22nd, for Wii
users to download and sample the service ahead of the official release
scheduled for March 2007.
Wii owners already have access
to the Wii Shop for buying downloadable games, and the Forecast Channel
which launched earlier today, but this is the first time the user will
be able to browse websites via the console.
"Our software
brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest videogame
system available," commented Scott Hedrick, executive VP of devices at
opera Software.
"Wii's unique interface adds a new
dimension to our browser, making it a useful tool that the whole family
will enjoy operating with ease."
The full version of the
Opera browser will be available for Wii users from March next year, and
will be free until the end of June. After June, users can purchase the
software from the Wii Shop for 500 Wii Points (around GBP 3.50).
"In
addition to providing innovative and exciting new ways to play, Wii
also offers further services and entertainment for all the family,"
said Laurent Fischer, marketing director for Nintendo of Europe.
"Wii is the perfect console for everyone to enjoy and this is being reflected in the phenomenal sales across Europe," he added. Source: Gamesindustry

Microsoft considers games for Zune |
|
Microsoft has gone on record to
admit that is deliberating whether to add gaming functionality to its
portable media player Zune.
Speaking in an interview
with website Total Video Games, Xbox European boss Chris Lewis said
that the company’s history in the sector was a major influence.
“You
can already plug your Zune device into your Xbox 360 to stream music,
pictures and video content,” said Lewis. “Looking ahead, the vision for
connected entertainment provides a number of consumer scenarios and
with our heritage in Xbox and Games For Windows, gaming is certainly
something [that] we’re considering for the device.”
The
news comes just months after Apple added in-built gaming functionality
to its iPod, adding downloadable 2D games to its iTunes service
including EA’s Tetris, Mahjong and Mini Golf.
Microsoft’s
Zune launched in the US to much fanfare last month, but a set date for
a European release has yet to be set. The corporation has previously
stated that it is “way off launch” in the territory, fuelling rumours
that device won’t land here until 2008.
Xbox 360 gamers
already have an advantage over non-gaming owners of Zune – they can
earn songs via Xbox Live. After accruing 79 Microsoft Points – around
80p –through Microsoft’s online gaming service, users can purchase a
single track to download.
Like iPod, the standard Zune
model is a 30GB device, and includes an FM tuner and Wi-Fi
capabilities. It holds a three inch colour screen and works in tandem
with Microsoft Windows and Media Player.

Sony, Amazon Partner for PSP Downloads |
|
Over the past year, retailers have been quietly liquidating their stock
of UMD movies. It seems consumers would rather play games on their PSP
than pay $40 for a movie they probably already own on DVD. But Sony
isn't giving up on handheld movies just yet. According to Financial Times, Sony is partnering with Amazon to sell movie downloads for the PSP.
Set to begin early next year, the service will allow users to download
a movie from Amazon to their PCs, and then transfer one copy to their
PSP via a memory stick.
Along with Amazon, Sony is also partnering with download services
Movielink and CinemaNow. Look for the first PSP movie downloads in Q1
2007.

New Kingdom Hearts in the Works? |
|
The Square Enix theater at the annual
Jump Festa show in Tokyo is always home to a few surprises, but this
year saw a particularly special announcement. Those who took the time
to view the main presentation were treated to a hint about a possible
new project in the Kingdom Hearts series.
The theater was
home to a number of clips for everything from Crisis Core to the Final
Fantasy XIII games (we'll have further details shortly). But the big
announcement came at the very end. Following a lengthy trailer for
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, a Japanese release of the English version
of Kingdom Hearts II, the message "New Project Starting in 2007"
appeared briefly before the screen went blank and the theater came to a
close.
The text was decorated with sparkles, and combined
with its placement right after the Kingdom Hearts trailer, we took it
to be a reference to the popular Disney crossover series. But, it may
well refer to something else.
Kingdom Hearts III? Or perhaps a brand new series? We'll have to wait until next year to find out for sure. Source: IGN
