Pokemon on the DS hot, on the Wii not
Nintendo NewsAfter all of these years the Pokemon phenomenon hasn’t died. Nintendo announced that they have shipped out five million copies of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl in Japan alone. The games come over to North America in April next year where it is sure to sell over a million copies. While the DS games are at the top of last week’s sales charts in Japan, Pokemon Battle Revolution for the Wii barely made the chart at number ten. Only 67,607 copies of the first online Wii title were sold. Narrowly beating out Pokemon Battle Revolution was Wii Sports with 69,923 copies sold last week.

Nintendo on Wii Sports 2 rumour
Nintendo News
Nintendo has dismissed French reports that Wii Sports 2 is already in development as "pure rumour and speculation".

NGC France had reported that a second title may well be in development, perhaps even with swimming, basketball and other sports included.

The first title comes free with the Wii in both the US and Europe, while early sales figures in Japan, where it is sold separately, had it as the console's most popular title.

"We're really pleased with the reaction to Wii Sports - from people completely new to gaming to the hardcore fans everyone has taken to it straight away," a Nintendo UK spokesperson commented.

"It might just be the most popular game this Christmas in homes across the UK."

In other words, they may not be talking about a sequel yet, but with online gaming still to come to Wii and the first game's popularity already significant, don't be surprised if the tune changes in future.

Nintendo Reveals Virtual Console Christmas
Nintendo NewsWhile not exactly the free Christmas gift that many were hoping for, Nintendo did see fit to spread some holiday cheer today with the announcement that several new Virtual Console games would be made available on Christmas Day. Wii owners with access to a high-speed Internet connection will soon be able to download even more retro-gaming goodness direct from Nintendo.

On Christmas morning, Wii owners will be treated to a surprise visit from Mario himself in the form of Super Mario Bros. for the NES, which can be downloaded for a mere 500 Wii Points. If Mario is not your thing -- although that would make owning a Wii pretty strange -- then there are plenty of other ways to sate your thirst for classic gaming on the Wii. Street Fighter II from the SNES is also slapping its way onto Nintendo's download service for 800 Wii Points. Players looking to vent their Christmas morning frustrations on the legions of the undead can do so with Super Castlevania IV, going for 800 Wii Points. Satisfying the desires of every child of the 90s, SEGA has saw fit to offer up the much-beloved Genesis title, ToeJam & Earl for 800 Wii Points. Finally, R-Type for the TurboGrafx-16 makes its return for 800 Wii Points.

This is the last Virtual Console Monday of 2006. Good thing Nintendo decided to give us all a present in the form of some of our favorite games ever.

Nintendo sued over Wii wrist straps
Nintendo News

Last week Nintendo announced a voluntary replacement program for the Wii Remote's wrist strap, which had been breaking at inopportune times for some customers and resulting in collateral damage. Shortly after the system launched in North America on November 19, reports popped up of broken cords, followed quickly by flying controllers crashing into high-priced electronics, living room furniture, and the occasional innocent bystander. While Nintendo acknowledged the Wii strap's problem and apparently addressed it, the company might not have done so in time.

On December 6, a Wii purchaser in Austin, Texas filed a class-action suit against Nintendo, alleging the publisher of violating the Washington Consumer Protection Act (Nintendo is based in the state of Washington, where the suit was filed) by engaging in "unfair or deceptive practices" by telling consumers that the wrist strap was to prevent the controller from flying out of a user's hand during use, and then providing a strap that was "ineffective for its intended use." The suit also claims that the Wii Remote strap's problems constitute a breach of warranty, and defines the class of people who may join the suit as including anybody who has purchased a Wii.

"As a result of the defective nature of the wrist strap on the Wii remote, plaintiff's wrist strap broke on his remote causing damage to the Wii product plaintiff purchased," the suit reads. "The controller is an essential component of any video game console, and so [the] plaintiff is unable to use the Nintendo Wii for its intended purposes as a result of the broken wrist band. Accordingly, it renders the Wii console, which retails in the United States for $250, useless."

The Wii only comes packed with a single controller, but additional Wii Remotes can be purchased for $50 each.

One of the plaintiff's lawyers told GameSpot that Nintendo's replacement program for the wrist straps will not cause them to drop the suit. As for whether purchasers of new Wii systems that come with thicker wrist straps for the Wii Remotes would be eligible to join the class-action suit, he said it would depend in part on whether the new straps adequately address the problem.

In his original filing, the plaintiff demands Nintendo cease what he sees as its unfair and deceptive practices, to refund or replace the strap with one that works as intended, reimburse him for legal expenses, and "such other and further relief as the Court deems just and proper."

As of press time, a Nintendo representative did not have a comment on the situation.

Wii Opera trial goes live December 22nd
Nintendo News
Nintendo has revealed that the Opera web browser will be available from this Friday, December 22nd, for Wii users to download and sample the service ahead of the official release scheduled for March 2007.

Wii owners already have access to the Wii Shop for buying downloadable games, and the Forecast Channel which launched earlier today, but this is the first time the user will be able to browse websites via the console.

"Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest videogame system available," commented Scott Hedrick, executive VP of devices at opera Software.

"Wii's unique interface adds a new dimension to our browser, making it a useful tool that the whole family will enjoy operating with ease."

The full version of the Opera browser will be available for Wii users from March next year, and will be free until the end of June. After June, users can purchase the software from the Wii Shop for 500 Wii Points (around GBP 3.50).

"In addition to providing innovative and exciting new ways to play, Wii also offers further services and entertainment for all the family," said Laurent Fischer, marketing director for Nintendo of Europe.

"Wii is the perfect console for everyone to enjoy and this is being reflected in the phenomenal sales across Europe," he added.

Nintendo replaces weak Wii straps
Nintendo News

Last week, Nintendo acknowledged that it was receiving reports of problems with the wrist strap that secures the Wii Remote to users' wrists and told the Associated Press that it was investigating the matter. Today, it appears that investigation has wrapped up, as the company is offering to replace users' Wii Remote straps free of charge. The newer version of the strap features a thicker cord to keep the controller tethered to a user's wrist.

However, Nintendo said it has been shipping Wii systems with the new cords since earlier this month, so it asks that users check to see which straps they have before submitting a request for replacements (see picture above). The Associated Press is reporting that Nintendo's offer applies to about 3.2 million straps worldwide and could cost the company several million dollars.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's notice of the voluntary replacement program says Nintendo has received three reports of injuries that occurred when a strap broke. All of them happened while users were playing Wii Sports, and none required medical attention.

All that secures the TV-remote-shaped controller to players' hands (other than players' fingers) is a cloth strap attached to the base of the controller by a thin cord. However, numerous reports have sprung up that the cord is breaking, sending the controllers flying out of the sweaty hands of gamers and into high-priced electronics, living room furniture, and the occasional innocent bystander.

Nintendo expects to begin shipping replacement straps around December 21, and they will take between five and nine days to arrive at their destination. To request up to four replacement straps, Wii owners are asked to give Nintendo their mailing addresses and Wii serial numbers at the company's official Web site.

Wii 2.0 To Bring HD Capabilites
Nintendo News
Rumor is that with the DVD version of the Wii comes an HDTV compatible system. We also have hints that Nintendo could supply both in a nice little firmware update.

In a recent interview with USA Today Reggie hints at HD

“Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. That’s because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday.”

So if we are to fill in the blanks, not including a DVD player at the start = 2007, then not including High-Definition capability = Sooner or later an update.

Game Informer got in touch with Nintendo PR which replied explaining that if Microsoft could enable 1080P with a firmware update, then Nintendo might be able to do the same thing. Nintendo proved it could update firmware this weekend when each system sold at launch had to update its firmware to enable SD card management.

So I got to thinking why would Nintendo launch a new Premium version of the Wii? Answer is they won't they will use the same version but with two big differences DVD playing and HD capabilities then just charge more for it. Makes sense right?

Well if they could do that why wouldn't they sell it through it's own online Wii store? They could sell the DVD player update for around 20 dollars and it'll get bought. But where to set the price for HD capability. My guess is around 50 dollars that way it will be about the same price as the Xbox 360 and in essence have the same features.

*Please take everything mentioned here with a grain of salt since much of this is speculation upon little known details.

Get ready: Wii Freeloader is coming soon
Nintendo NewsIt looks like Wii lovers hoping to do even more with their new console can rest easy, knowing that someone's on the case. Why? Because we just got word that Datel is working on a Nintendo Wii version of their Freeloader software.

An article on Spong mentions that the company is already working on the new software for Wii consoles. This Wii Freeloader should allow UK Wii owners to play US titles and hopefully vice-versa. While there's no date of availability or price yet, we're rooting for them and hope that  they finish it soon.

As most of you might notice on your own handheld devices, Datel is responsible for a lot of the add-ons we've been using in consoles today. They make the Action Replay cheat devices, and have developed a host of third-party devices for use with Nintendo gadgets, such as a wireless router for the Wii and DS and a "save and transfer" memory card for the Wii. Hopefully, they'll be speeding up their research and development facility so we can all enjoy some region-free goodness soon.
